Zora took a small party consisting of herself, Garret, Jack, and Nilo—at his insistence—down to the surface of the planet known as Mindell. Surber and his bodyguards remained in orbit to sulk in disapproval as they nestled in among several other yachts and luxury liners that were on hand for the slave market happening on the planet’s surface. Nilo’s prediction about standing out ended up being false, but the registry of his ship had nevertheless been duly changed, just to be sure no one associated the sleek craft with him.

As Clara’s Gift rumbled its way into atmospheric entry, Nilo maintained that same focused gaze that suggested a boiling hatred waiting just beneath the surface. And seeing as he wore his body armor—state-of-the-art and capable of making a legionnaire jealous, if only because of how sleek it looked—it was clear that for him, this trip down to the surface was no mere detour. He was man on a mission, lacking the usual personal attentiveness to those around him, the hyper-focused attunement to the thoughts and needs of others. Even when he was asked direct questions—usually by Garret—he would blink, shake his head, and politely ask for the question to be repeated.

Zora and Jack had both heard the rumors. Not the juicy gossip holos that suggested flings or linked Nilo to all manner of conspiracy theories. These ranged from Nilo wanting to represent Kublar as a senator, to Nilo wanting to become the Republic’s new emperor… because he was somehow Goth Sullus’s son. There was no end to such idiocy when it came to Arkaddy Nilo.

Jack and Zora put no stock in any of that. The only rumors they cared about were the whispers shared by the other spooks, agents, and mercs in the organization. People who knew at least something about which they spoke. And according to them, Nilo was a ruthless man when he needed to be.

Extremely ruthless.

At first this seemed to Zora like just another of the fanciful tales that the man attracted like deep-spacers to a brothel. It was precisely the sort of claim a bunch of shooters with too much time on their hands between missions would dream up to pass the hours. Men who already knew thought they knew everything, so when a topic came up that they truly knew nothing about, they felt an overwhelming need to present themselves as an expert on the subject anyway. It was alarming the way otherwise-competent men would rather fabricate a story—and then insist on their own correctness—rather than simply admit ignorance.

But now, after seeing Nilo’s reaction to coming across a possible Gomarii slave ship, Zora decided that there was, perhaps, some truth not only to the claims of Nilo’s ruthlessness, but to one of the other stories that the men told when he wasn’t around. That he’d once been a prisoner of the blue-skinned slavers. That he’d somehow found a path to freedom, and then, rather than running to the safety of the core, used his talents to
